Happy World Plumbing Day – March 11

World Plumbing Day was established by the World Plumbing Council (WPC) in 2010, and observed annually on March 11. The day raises awareness of plumbing’s critical role in everyday life.

Brief History of Plumbing

  • Ancient civilizations (India, China, Rome, etc.) developed early water and waste systems
  • Rome was most advanced: aqueducts delivered 1.2 billion liters of water daily
  • After Rome’s fall (5th century), sanitation collapsed for 1,000+ years, enabling diseases like cholera, typhoid, and plague

Key Milestones in Modern Plumbing

  • 1652 – Boston built America’s first citywide water system
  • 1804 – Philadelphia adopted cast iron pipes
  • 1855 – Chicago built the first major sewer system
  • Late 19th century – Thomas Crapper’s toilet design gained widespread adoption
  • Early 20th century – Indoor plumbing became common in the U.S.

Why Plumbing Still Matters

  • 2.1 billion people (3 in 10 globally) lack safe home water access (WHO)
  • 6 in 10 people worldwide lack home toilets
  • 361,000 children under 5 die annually from contaminated water
  • Progress: 1 billion+ people gained piped water access between 2000–2015

The Role of Trained Plumbers

  • Industry regulated since 1926 via the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials
  • Plumbers complete multi-year apprenticeships focused on waste management and water safety
