In Memory of Thomas J. Wanner: A Legacy in Construction Education
It is with deep respect and gratitude that we remember Thomas J. Wanner, 73, of Akron, Ohio, who passed away peacefully on Friday, March 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Tom dedicated his life to advancing education in the construction and plumbing industries, leaving an indelible mark on countless professionals. His career began as the Education Director of the Associated General Contractors of America in Cleveland and Detroit before he found his true passion as Executive Director of the Mechanical and Plumbing Industry Council in 1986. Throughout his career, he played a pivotal role in labor relations, education, legislation, and business operations for mechanical and plumbing contractors.
Tom was instrumental in helping OAPI secure educational support for its online education program, and in 2022, he was honored with a plaque recognizing his unwavering dedication to the plumbing industry. His leadership extended beyond his professional roles—he was a Leadership Cleveland graduate, a trustee for the National Mechanical Contracting Foundation, and served on numerous industry and civic committees, always working to strengthen the field he loved.
A man of wisdom, patience, and integrity, Tom had a remarkable ability to bring people together, guiding opposing sides toward resolution with fairness and respect. His contributions were recognized when the Mechanical Contractors Association of America established the “MCI – Thomas Wanner Scholarship”, an annual award presented at the MCAA convention to support the next generation of industry leaders—a tribute he cherished deeply.
